TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A man convicted of raping and suffocating a 10-year-old girl after breaking into her Orange County home almost 23 years ago will get one extra day to live.
Gov. Rick Scott sent a letter to the warden of Florida State Prison Monday to reschedule the execution of 56-year-old Elmer Leon Carroll from at 6 p.m. on May 28 to the same time the following day. The letter says the change is "to accommodate key personnel," but no further explanation was given.
Carroll was sentenced to death in the first-degree murder of Christine McGowan of Apopka, the night before Halloween in 1990. Carroll was living next door at a homeless men's mission and was arrested within hours of the girl's body being found.
Scott signed Carroll's death warrant last week.
